Volvo's 850 Wagon in the 1994 BTCC But Why Did They Choose Wagon?

18th July 2023 9 Comments When Volvo released the T5 variant of their 850, the Swedish automaker wanted to boost its profile in order to gain market share. Instead of a traditional marketing campaign, Volvo took the 850 racing in the British Touring Car Championship. How the decision to use the 850 estate came about wasn't intentional though.

The 850 Estate racer was equipped with a 2.0 litre 20 valve 5-cylinder in-line engine (without turbo), delivering 280bhp @ 8.500rpm. The car was a frontwheeldrive (FWD) and has a X-Trac 6-speed sequential gearbox. The brakes were all ventilated discs by Brembo (which also supplied the brake calipers).

The five-cylinder engine was carried over to the S40 raced from 1997 and helped propel TWR, Volvo and Rydell to the BTCC championship in 1998. Perhaps not a winner on the track, the 850 Estate provided Volvo with superb media attention and also provided a fabulous alibi to use the program's first year to properly develop the package with little.

Volvo and TWR used their five-cylinder engine as a basis, which in the 850 Turbo had a 2.3 litre volume and produced 225 hp. In the racing version - with no turbo and with a 2 litre volume - it produced around 290 hp. The five speed manual transmission in the standard car was replaced with a six speed sequential transmission.

Back in the early 90's, The 850 estate was entered into the BTCC. Everyone thought it was a joke and a marketing gimmick and it worked. Volvo wanted to prove that the Swedish company don't just build super safe cars, but also build cars that has performance. Rumored that an 850 sedan was supposed to be used to compete in BTCC but there was.
